「A part of the EARTH 」 B series 2009-2011
My encaustic painting series, A part of the EARTH, springs from my aspiration to connect with the origin of life, primitive memories and the universe. This series is about connecting with a macro view of the universe by focusing on the micro world. Understanding that each of the particles circulating in a cycle of natural phenomena contains a single story of life, I imagine the collective memories of the earth, composed of accumulations of these particles, as embedded within the earth’s strata. These accumulations of memory are what I see within minerals, and why they have become the subject of this series.
Encaustic is a technique of painting in which heated beeswax is substituted for paint. Colored pigments are added to the heated beeswax, which is then repeatedly applied to the surface of a painting, with the wax being cooled off and shaved in the process. As a result, encaustic creates a multi-layered marbled pattern. Beyond this visual similarity to minerals, however, the process of encaustic itself represents ceaseless processes of nature – the shifts in the states of matter and the formation of geological strata – that have shaped our universe since its beginning. As I replicate these processes, the beauty and energy of natural phenomena are transferred to my paintings.
I examine the micro because all living creatures are similar, composed of similar elements and structures, when considered from a microscopic view. We are all a part of the earth, circulating in a cycle of life along with the particles that form minerals. Through the A part of the EARTH series, I seek the realization that everything in the universe is inextricably connected.
これらの作品はエンコスティックで描いています。エンコスティック（Encaustic）とは、古代ギリシャを起源とする古典技法のひとつです。蜜蝋を主成分とし顔料や樹脂を混ぜた蝋絵の具を熱で固着させる画法、及び蝋画の意。私が蜜蝋に魅せられたきっかけは、油画の仕上げに蜜蝋入りワニスを使用した時でした。薄く塗布したその層はまるでオブラートの様な美しさで、画面に生気を与えました。そこから蝋への探求が始まったのですが、国内で蝋を扱った絵画を見る機会は少なく、素材の特質を生かす方法と表現したいものを合致させる道を模索しました。蝋に興味を持ち始めて数年後、その時はやってきました。ある時、マーブリングや墨流しの繊細な模様に魅力を感じ「A part of the EARTH A series」をつくり始め、マーブル（大理石）というモチーフに出会い、そこからさらに石や鉱物の事を調べていくうちに、蝋の特質を用いれば自然の現象を取りこみ鉱物の成り立ちや地質のしくみを模範して作品をつくれるのでは、と思ったのです。
「A part of the EARTH B series」は自作の蝋絵具を薄い層で幾重にも重ね、熱風や火で溶かし、削りながら画面を構築しています。隣接した色、素材、温度、様々な条件が合わさって思わぬ効果を生む様は、鉱物の絶え間ない輪廻として織りなす地質作用を思わせます。足元にある小さな石ころには膨大な時間と記憶が詰まっている。小さな粒子は長い年月をかけ熱、圧力、堆積、風化、浸食、変成を繰り返し地球規模の物質大循環を繰り返す。そんな途方もない時間と比べれば、私たちの命は短く儚いものですが、私たちもまた、あらゆるものに影響され、変成し痕跡を残しながら循環しているのだと気付かされます。植物、生物、鉱物、人間、すべてが地球の一部であり、宇宙と直結しそのしくみに組み込まれ、いのちを燃やすのです。

「A part of the EARTH 」 A series 2009-2010
A series の作品はマーブリング技法を用いています。ヨーロッパやイスラムの国では古くから本の装飾等に使用され、現在もマーブリング職人が様々なマープリング紙を制作しています。そもそもマーブルとは「大理石」「小石模様」の意味があり、イスラム圏ではエブルと呼ばれ「雲」を示します。昔の人々はこの技法を利用し、自然が織りなす美しい模様を写し取ろうとしたのではないでしょうか。マーブリングは時代と共に形態を変えながら装飾性を強めていきましたが、私はその模様を作る過程や、もととなった大理石、鉱物に着目しつつ美術作品として高めようとしています。石の模様や積層には膨大な時間が積み重ねられ、その間におこる様々な自然現象や物質によって形態を変えながら、不純物をも取り込み留まる事なく変化し続けている。そんな気の遠くなるような時間の流れに思いを馳せた時、私たちの時間はほんの一瞬で儚いものですが、それでも、石ころのなかにある小さな粒子の様に、確かに存在し痕跡を残してゆくのです。
